It’s Officially Done: Phil Anselmo and DOWN Are Ready for Their 2026 Return

After more than a decade of waiting, DOWN is finally preparing to return with a brand-new full-length album in 2026.

The New Orleans sludge-metal supergroup has completed the recording of its long-awaited new record, and guitarist Kirk Windstein has revealed one detail that should get longtime fans especially excited: Phil Anselmo’s vocals were recorded without Auto-Tune or digital correction.

In fact, Windstein believes fans may be shocked by just how good Anselmo sounds on the new material.

The upcoming album will be DOWN’s first full-length studio release since Down III: Over the Under in 2007, following the band’s two Down IV EPs released in 2012 and 2014.

For fans who grew up with the unmistakable howl of Phil Anselmo on NOLA and Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow, perhaps the biggest question surrounding the new album has always been simple:

Speaking during a recent interview with Poland’s Mystic Festival, the DOWN guitarist praised Anselmo’s performance and said that fans would “not believe how well he sings” on the new record.

Windstein also made an unusually direct statement about the recording process:

There was “zero Auto-Tune” or digital vocal correction involved.

Drummer Jimmy Bower backed him up, saying that Phil “sang his ass off” during the sessions.

That revelation could become one of the most interesting talking points surrounding the album.

Rather than trying to hide the natural character of Anselmo’s voice behind modern studio processing, DOWN appears to be embracing the imperfections, aggression, and character that have always been part of the singer’s identity.

Rather than chasing a modernized version of sludge metal, the new material appears to be built around the things that originally made DOWN special: massive riffs, loose grooves, Southern blues influences, heavy psychedelic textures, and Phil Anselmo's unmistakable vocal presence.

Windstein has previously described the songs as “very old school”, while also saying the chemistry between the members felt similar to the band's early years.

Another interesting detail is Anselmo’s contribution to the songwriting.

According to Windstein, three of the album’s 10 songs are essentially Phil’s songs, with Anselmo responsible for every part of those tracks.

That makes the partnership particularly interesting for longtime fans.

DOWN has accumulated a cult following since NOLA arrived in 1995, and renewed attention on the band's back catalog could help introduce a new generation of listeners to the records that helped define Southern sludge metal.

When Will the New DOWN Album Be Released?

The exact release date has not yet been announced.

However, Kirk Windstein previously suggested that the album could arrive around September 2026, while another update in April indicated that the band was hoping for a release around October.

So for now, fall 2026 appears to be the safest window.

The important part is that the album itself is no longer just a collection of unfinished recordings.

The recording work is done, and the band has been moving through the final stages of preparing the record for release.

DOWN Is Already Back in the Spotlight

While fans wait for the new album, DOWN has already revisited its past.

The 2026 remastered edition of Down III: Over the Under arrived on June 19 through Nuclear Blast, featuring remastered audio and the bonus track “Invest In Fear.”

It is a fitting warm-up for the band's next chapter.

After years of waiting, fans are getting another chance to revisit the band's catalog just as DOWN prepares to deliver its first new full-length record in nearly two decades.

Will Phil Anselmo Still Sound Like Phil Anselmo?

This may ultimately become the biggest question surrounding the album.

The answer, at least according to the people who were actually in the room, is reassuring.

Yes, Phil Anselmo is still bringing that voice.

But perhaps more importantly, Kirk Windstein's comments suggest that fans may hear a version of Anselmo that feels more natural and unfiltered than ever.

No Auto-Tune.

No attempt to disguise the rough edges.

Just Phil Anselmo delivering the songs the way DOWN believes they should sound.
